Course content and assessment


The EPTA UK/Purcell course provides comprehensive teacher training which is delivered by a team of eminent piano pedagogues


The Principal Tutors, responsible for the curriculum and the organisation of the course are:
Lucinda Mackworth-Young (Director from EPTA UK), William Fong (Director from Purcell School),Heli Ignatius-Fleet, Cathy Riley, Sally Chappell, Sharon Mark, Dr Georgia Volioti, Edward Longstaff and Jane Hunt.

The course is organised into two modules:

A. Practical piano teaching: includes sessions on teaching strategies from the first years at the piano to advanced stages, teaching adults, curriculum planning and teaching jazz and popular styles,and topics such as sight-reading, aural training, improvisation and composition, interactive teaching workshops, psychology for the piano teacher, motivating pupils.

B. Pianism: psychology for performance, interpretation and style, pedalling, ornamentation, physical well being of pianists.

Students on the course are taught by a varied and versatile programme of lectures, teaching demonstrations, interactive workshops and masterclasses

At the beginning of the course each student is allocated a tutor, who provides mentoring and further opportunities for discussions and meetings in tutorial groups. The interactive character of the course allows students to work effectively in smaller groups and share their ideas and experiences with the whole peer group. Teaching on the course is supplemented by recommended reading, private study and preparatory activities, which the students undertake at various stages throughout the course


Assessment

Assessment on the course is by completion of assignments which contribute towards successful attainment of The Certificate of The Practical Piano Teaching Course (CertPPTC)
The course assignments are designed specifically to give students the opportunity to develop case studies of pupils, portfolios of teaching materials and practical experience in pianism.
 
The course is excellent preparation for the Piano Teaching Diplomas of Trinity Guildhall, ABRSM and London College.
 
Appropriately qualified and successful students of the Practical Piano Teaching Course can be accredited with 40 credits at M level in recognition of the course when applying to the Mtpp (Music Teaching in Professional Practice) programme at Reading University. Please note that this accreditation is available only in relation to the Mtpp.
